Moulay Bousselham

A birdwatchers paradise at sunrise

Only a few hour’s drive from the ferry port the small town of Moulay Bousselham sits with the ocean on one side and the Merja Zerga lagoon on the other, this tidal lagoon is home to many species of birds and fish including flamingoes and is also the source of income for the local fishermen whom you can see waiting for the influx of water to get there small fishing boats afloat and head out into the lagoon to get the days catch.

Either you can stay overnight or head down for sunrise and book yourself into La Casa Latifa right on the bank of the lagoon where the owner and his family will do everything possible to accommodate your stay, be it in a campervan or if you want a room for the night. If you are in the van you can use one of the rooms to get a shower and freshen up.

Sunrise on the lagoon is nothing short of breathtaking, with the morning mist giving way to the sun’s rays and depending on the tides the water sluggishly at first slowly creeping towards you, its an easy day by the lagoon watching the ebb and flow of the tides and the comings and goings of any number of resident and migratory birds that use the lagoon as a place to rest and restore on there way north and south looking for better feeding grounds and warmer weather.

If you are looking for somewhere good to eat in Moulay Bousselham head down to La Terrasse restaurant on the beach side of the town and pull up a chair on one of the balcony tables above the vast expanse of sand that makes up Moulay Bousselham beach, it’s pretty western in its fare but the food is really tasty and to be honest your there for the sunset view more than anything else.
