THE JOURNEY BEGINS
Leaving the port of Algeciras and heading to the port of Tanger Med in Morocco on a chilly morning in early January.
The port itself is easy to get through and is on the opposite side of the bay from the Rock of Gibraltar which is a good choice stop before heading over as it has some great duty-free shopping to be had before stocking up for your time in Morocco.
Once you have picked up your tickets you’ll be vaid to travel on the next available ferry so it’s just a case of waiting in the queue at the ferry port until the port authorities signal your line of vehicles to get up the ramp and into the belly of whichever iron sea monster is gonna carry you to the sunshine.
The crossing itself only takes just over an hour depending on the sea conditions and the loading up of the ferry once it begins isn’t too bad, once you’re parked up you can head to the deck and take a last look at the shores of Europe before heading to AFRICA !!!
The Ferry was comfortable but fairly basic but you can grab a decent coffee or sandwich.
One thing you will need to remember is to pop by the Immigration kiosk and get your passport stamped while you’re on the boat. It’s easy to find, just look for the long queue of people.
Arriving at the other side in Tanger Med things start to slow down a little bit and you will probably find yourself sitting in your vehicle for a good hour before you get to disembark but once you get off the boat you just need to get up to customs and get through the fairly painless inspection but I know that for some this can be a bit more stressful than for others.
Make sure once you’ve cleared customs to head over to the line of kiosks that house the insurance companies and get your vehicle insured, again a very painless process that takes no more than ten minutes and after that, you are now free to hit the Toll roads leaving Tanger Med and begin exploring the north of Morocco and remember your now in Africa!!
